Open Letter to the Narendra Modi and the Government of India
OPEN LETTER TO THE NARENDRA MODI AND GOVERNMENT OF INDIA

End the Violence and Intimidation Against Students and Youth Exercising Their Democratic Rights
We, student movements from Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Burma, write to express our solidarity with the students and young people of India who have taken to the streets to defend their education, dignity and future. We are deeply concerned by reports of violence, intimidation, arrests and excessive force against students and peaceful demonstrators. Batons, tear gas, threats and detention are not legitimate answers to the grievances of a generation.
The students are not enemies of the state. They are citizens demanding accountability from the institutions entrusted with their education and future. It is a fundamental democratic right. A government cannot claim to uphold democracy while treating peaceful civic participation as a threat to public order. Across Asia, student movements have repeatedly faced the same pattern. This must end.
We strongly condemn any brutality, harassment or intimidation committed against students, journalists, activists, women and ordinary citizens participating in peaceful demonstrations. Violence against unarmed protesters only deepens public anger and damages the democratic legitimacy of the government.
We therefore call upon the Prime Minister and Government of India to immediately end the use of excessive force against demonstrators, release individuals detained solely for peacefully exercising their democratic rights, investigate allegations of police brutality and ensure accountability for those responsible.
We believe that the struggles of students and young people across Asia are deeply connected. When one of us is facing injustice, we cannot remain silent. We will continue to stand with one another, support each other, and speak out against violence, repression, and all forms of injustice.
From Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, Manila to Jakarta and Yangon, we stand with the students and youth of India.
Long live the resistance.
